Thank you for your interest in obtaining a Middlesex Habitat for Humanity house for you and your family. Below is a pre-qualifying Interest form. Once this form is completed, you will be placed in our applicant database. If you prefer, you may download and mail the form.

As properties become available, Middlesex Habitat will contact you to attend a meeting with other potential Habitat families. The purpose of the meeting is to begin the formal application for home ownership. This will include the completion of a more detailed application, permission for a credit check and verification of current income status. These meetings take place as properties become available.

The three basic requirements to obtaining a Habitat home are the following:

  • You must have a need for simple, decent housing
  • You must be able to pay for a no- interest mortgage for a Habitat house
  • You must be willing to partner with us in building your house by providing 200+ hours of sweat equity per adult in the family (Reasonable accommodation will be made for people with disabilities who may be unable to work at the building site). Other family members and friends may help fulfill the hours or other activities will be substituted.

Please notify Habitat if your address or phone number changes so your record may be updated. Also note that preference will be given to families living or working in Middlesex County. Steps to owning your own home through Middlesex Habitat for Humanity

What is Middlesex Habitat for Humanity? It is part of a world-wide Christian housing ministry that forms partnerships with people in need, to build houses, develop communities and create hope…. one house at a time.

We are pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation.  We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program. We recognize that housing discrimination is illegal throughout the state of Connecticut. It is against the law to deny anyone housing based on: race, color, religion, creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, familial status, age, lawful source of income, or learning disability, physical and/or mental disability.

To qualify to buy a Habitat home, the homeowner candidate(s) must commit to work a minimum of 200 “sweat equity” (200 hours per adult applicant) hours.

Who pays to build the houses? Habitat uses donations of money and building materials, along with volunteer labor, to build homes at lower cost. The homes are sold to new homeowners at no profit and with a zero interest rate mortgage.

How are the homeowners chosen? Homeowners are selected on the basis of need, willingness to partner with Habitat to help build their home and the ability to repay the mortgage.


Step 1:

Please answer the following questions. Note: This is preliminary information to see if you are initially eligible to apply for a Habitat House. See Step 2 for information on the full application process.

1. Is your rental housing overcrowded, poorly maintained, and/or too expensive for your income?

2. Do you rent your housing in Middletown, Portland, Chester, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Hampton, Middlefield, East Haddam, Haddam, Essex, Old Saybrook, or Westbrook? And if not would you be willing to move to one of these communities?

3. Do you must meet our income guidelines and can provide documentation?

4. Are you or a member of your immediate family willing and able to help build your home-to-be, and those of your neighbors by working 200 hours? (200 hours per adult applicant)

Step 2:

If you answered YES to all of these questions, then your name will be placed on our Applicant Log. We will notify you as properties become available. At that time you will be invited to attend a house applicant meeting with other Habitat applicant families who are interested in that particular house and are willing to complete the full application process.
